Oriane Stender

A La Recherche

Saturday September 28 2019
only between 5:30 and 7:30 PM

This series of drawings is based on - and made of - Marcel Proust's A La Recherche du Temps Perdu. After lightly coating the pages with beeswax, I draw on them with high carbon ink, adding my voice to the narrative, while still maintaining the influence of the legacy. In all of my work I try to balance the intellectual with the visceral, to keep the balance between craft and concept.

Born in San Francisco, California, Oriane Stender's work is in the collections of several museums including Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco/de Young Memorial Museum, and has been reviewed in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The New Criterion, and The Chicago Tribune. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has been called "the secret love-child of Anni Albers and Andy Warhol".

The artist's narrative lays over the Proustian narrative, multiplying the layers between time and subject, so the elective affinity is shown with a polychrome and involuntary calligraphy, like memory. Donata Negrini
