Marina Cappelletto

place - time - silence

Sunday October 1 2023
only between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM

Each oil painting on paper depicts a dark interior space, with an arched widow above and a doorway below. There is a line of water at the bottom of each work, but it's not clear whether the water is rising or falling. Through each window and doorway, there is a different view. Locations and times of day may differ within the same work. My thought process centers on making visible the contrasts that exist between perception and reality, the real and the imagined, and the present and the past. My visual sources include late medieval and early Renaissance painting and architecture, and the animations of Hayao Miyazaki.

Marina Cappelletto was born in Milan (1953) and, except for some years spent in France (1992-96) and Italy (1988, 1996), has lived in the United States since childhood. Presently, she lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She has had one-person shows in the United States, and her work has been included in group shows in Italy, France and the United States. Cappelletto has participated in residencies at PS 1 in New York City and at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France. Her work is represented in public and private collections in the United States and in Italy, including the Brooklyn Museum and the Boca Raton Museum of Art.
